Few vintage watches capture both rarity and mythology like the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Ref. 6062. This ultra-rare model, featuring a black dial with diamond hour markers and triple calendar with moon phase, sold for $6.2 million at Monaco Legend Auction, becoming the third most expensive Rolex ever sold.

Produced briefly in the early 1950s, the Ref. 6062 stands among the most complex Rolex models ever made — combining automatic movement with a full calendar display, all encased within the brand’s signature Oyster case.

Its rarity lies not only in its technical innovation but also in its aesthetic: the black dial version, particularly with diamond indexes, is among the most sought-after configurations in Rolex history.

Collectors regard the 6062 as a symbol of Rolex’s golden age — a time when precision met poetry, and mechanical mastery was still hand-finished.

Beyond its technical mastery, the Ref. 6062 embodies the quiet sophistication that defined Rolex’s mid-century era. When introduced at the 1950 Basel Fair, it stood apart for uniting the practicality of the Oyster case — celebrated for water resistance — with the romanticism of celestial complication. Few brands could balance functionality and emotion with such restraint.

At the Exclusive Timepieces auction, this combination of rarity, provenance, and preserved originality sparked fervent bidding. The final price — $6.2 million USD— reaffirmed the Ref. 6062’s position among the pantheon of collectible Rolex models, alongside the legendary “Bao Dai” and “Paul Newman” Daytonas.

Each surviving example tells its own story, shaped by subtle variations in dial design, typography, and patina. Yet, among connoisseurs, the black-dial configuration remains the ultimate grail — a study in contrast between gold warmth and nocturnal depth. The diamond hour markers, set by hand, elevate it further into the realm of artistry.
